    What is Bio-C-Vitamin

Bio-C-vitamine tabletsBio-C-vitamin is eggshell-colored, film-coated, oval tablets measuring 16 x 9 mm. Each tablet contains 750 mg of vitamin C in the form of calcium ascorbate. As the tablet does not contain any animal ingredients, it is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The tablets are manufactured in pharmaceutical quality. Bio-C-vitamine can be taken with or without a meal.

    Acid-neutral vitamin C

To protect sensitive stomachs from the acid action of vitamin C, the tablet is made acid-neutral. To make vitamin C acid-neutral, it is bound to calcium in a chemical compound, turning it into calcium ascorbate. In other words: Calcium ascorbate is a calcium salt of ascorbic acid, a molecule made up of ascorbic acid and calcium. Calcium ascorbate acts like vitamin C, but has no acid effect.

Bio-C-vitamin can be taken without a meal, however, in nature, vitamin C never appears in isolation, but always together with a number of other nutrients such as flavonoids. Therefore, it may be beneficial to take Bio-C-vitamin with a meal.

Bio-C-Vitamin may be used by pregnant and lactating women.

    What is vitamin C?

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin and an important antioxidant. The fact that vitamin C is water-soluble means that we do not have a large stock of it in the body, which is why we need a regular supply. Vitamin C protects proteins, lipids (fats), carbohydrates and nucleic acids such as DNA and RNA against damage from the free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are formed during normal metabolism and when we are exposed to pollution in the form of chemical substances in the environment including tobacco smoke.

Mammals produce their own vitamin C

Almost all mammals are able to synthesize vitamin C in their adrenal glands by means of an enzymatic conversion of glucose. In these animals vitamin C works like a hormone. In humans, on the other hand, the gene of the vitamin C-producing enzyme contains a number of mutations resulting in an inability to produce the vitamin and therefore we depend on it from our diet.

The body's immune cells usually contain a high amount of vitamin C, and vitamin C supports the normal immune system in several ways.

Vitamin C is also part of the normal functioning of the nervous system. The nerve cells in the body's central nervous system contain very high concentrations of vitamin C. Here, vitamin C has a wide range of functions such as antioxidant protection, the formation of peptides and myelin, which is a protective layer of fat that surrounds parts of the nerve cells and which improves their function. Vitamin C also protects the nerve cells from the substance glutamate, which can damage the nerve cells if the level becomes too high.

Vitamin C is part of the body's normal energy metabolism, as it contributes to the formation of the amino acid carnitine, which is an essential cofactor in the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the cells' energy-producing mitochondria. In this way, vitamin C helps to reduce fatigue and exhaustion.

Vitamin C contributes to the body's normal production of various types of collagen in the body. Collagen is made up of protein and is found in skin, mucous membranes, bones, tendons, blood vessels, connective tissue and hair cells. About one-third of the body's protein consists of collagen.

Vitamin C increases the bioavailability of iron from food by increasing intestinal uptake of non-haem iron. Non-haem iron come from plants. Haem-iron comes from meat and fish.

Vitamin C helps to repair the fat-soluble vitamin E that has been destroyed during the work of protecting fats from rancidity in the body. After this, vitamin E can function normally again.

The best dietary sources of vitamin C

fruit and vegetables Vitamin C is found especially in fruits, berries and vegetables, which are also the best dietary sources, especially when these foods are fresh. Among foods with the highest content of vitamin C we find rose hips, sea buckthorn, peppers, parsley and cabbage, especially kale. Foods with a low vitamin C content may also be an important source of vitamin C if the daily intake is relatively high. Vitamin C is broken down by heating, light and oxygen.

Vitamin C tablets should dissolve within 30 minutes, to be able to be well absorbed into the body. If it takes longer to dissolve than 60 minutes, much of the vitamin will disappear in the toilet. Make you own test with a Bio-C tablet in a glass of lukewarm water. Set the timer and check.
