What is glucosamine?
Glucosamine is a small water-soluble molecule (an amino-monosaccharide) that the body is able to synthesize. Glucosamine is included as a building block in the union of glycosaminoglycan and hyaluronic acid, both of which are used in the construction of joint cartilage. In animal experiments, the substance has been found to inhibit cartilage degradation, probably through inhibition of enzymes involved in the gradual breakdown of joint carge. Glucosamine is a slow-acting substance. Therefore, pain relief can only be expected after several weeks of daily glucosamine intake, in some cases even longer. Glucosamine has low acute toxicity.
What is osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is one of the most common forms of arthritis. It is also known as wear-and-tear arthritis but this name is actually misleading because regular exercise and proper use of your joints actually help to keep the cartilage in good health.
The cartilage in a healthy knee joint is intact. However, with passing time, a degradation process may start that causes the cartilage to slowly disappear, eventually causing the bone ends to grate against each other. The bone compensates for the lacking cartilage tissue by growing and forming so-called spurs or osteophytes. These growths can cause pain and/or reduced mobility.
Osteoarthritis can be caused by age, obesity (especially when combined with inactivity), genetics (inheritance), improper loading of the joints, or monotonous and poor posture in particular lines of work with examples like factory workers, farmers, waste collectors, librarians, etc. Certain types of sports also lead to an increased risk of osteoarthritis. The condition is rather common with ballet dancers and soccer players.
The risk of osteoarthritis increases with age. After reaching 65 years, nearly all people experience some degree of the condition. However, there is a gender difference, as osteoarthritis of the knees are most prevalent among women, whereas men are more likely to experience osteoarthritis of the hips.
Glucosamine for osteoarthritis symptoms
Glucosamine is an endogenously synthesized substance that supports the structure of cartilage. Effective glucosamine is extracted from the shells of crustaceans.
According to the scientific literature, there are major quality and purity differences between various glucosamine sources. It is recommended to take pharmaceutical-grade glucosamine sulphate.
Be aware when taking glucosamine
Caution is required in the following situations:
- Impaired renal function and/or potassium-poor diet
- Diabetes. Measure your blood sugar regularly when taking glucosamine
- Asthma
- Increased INR (International Normalized Ratio) with coumarin anticoagulants (warfarin and acenocoumaro) has been reported
- The possibility of interactions with other medicines cannot be excluded
Allergy to shellfish
If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to glucosamine, to shellfish, or any of the ingredients, do not take glucosamine as the active substance is derived from shellfish.
Pregnancy and lactation
Due to the lack of adequate studies of the safety of taking glucosamine during pregnancy and lactation, Glucosamine Pharma Nord is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Undesirable effects
The most common reactions associated with glucosamine therapy are nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion, constipation, and diarrhea. In addition, headache, tiredness, rash, itching, and flushing have been reported. The reported adverse reactions are usually mild and transient.
